History

Bayon was built by King Jayavarman VII in the late 12th and early 13th centuries. It was the last "Temple Mountain" to be built in the Khmer style as a Buddhist shrine.

Architecture

It was built in a totally different style from Angkor Wat and many of the other temples. This unique style has proven to be extremely popular with guests and it's second only to the great temple at Angkor Wat.

Religion

Although originally a Buddhist temple, it was converted into a Hindu temple later in the 13th century. It was then converted into a Theravada Buddhist temple during the later years of the Khmer Empire.
